Whilst many of us think of memory loss as being associated with aging, in fact it can be caused by one of many health-related factors.
The causes of memory loss could be any one of :-
- stroke
- drugs
- depression
- alzheimer's
- concussion or head injury
- brain-related problems (e.g. surgery or tumours)
- alcohol
- aging
- stress
Whilst this list is not comprehensive, it give an idea of the range of health problems that can cause short or long term memory loss problems.
How can I cope with memory loss as a result of aging ? 
As you age, you start to lose brain cells. The older you become, the more these changes can affect your memory.
It's quite normal to have problems remembering the names of people that you've just met.
Here's a few tips and activities to help jog your memory:-
- write it down !
- keep a diary - put everything in it
- keep your brain active - watch programs like Countdown, complete crosswords, etc
- practice remembering - repeat a new name to yourself several times and make associations with past events or people
- keep to a routine - always keep your keys in the same place, double check that you've locked your car, etc
Despite it being frustrating, problems with your memory are usually not serious.
When should I worry ? 
If you're starting to have problems coping with everyday events, it may be worth visiting your doctor or health care practitioner.
For example, if you forget how to get to the local store, something that you've done many times before.
Dementia tends to get worse over a period of months or years.
What about Alzheimers & memory loss ?
One of the main problems with Alzheimers patients is storing new information.
Keeping new information simple helps. Try and reduce the stress in their lives and maintain a routine.
As the disease progresses, the memory is likely to degrade further.
