Retirement Gifts

A suitable retirement gift for a man may depend on what his hobbies are - for example, a motoring enthusiast may appreciate memorabilia or gadgets related to cars; a golf fanatic may enjoy a day's golfing at a renowned golf course or a new club or golf bag.

It's sometimes harder to choose a retirement gift for a woman - it's probably a good idea to ask a close working colleague or a friend what they might appreciate.  Failing that, it may be better just to come out and ask directly rather than buy an expensive present which is not really appropriate.  Giving a bouquet or basket of flowers is always well received!

An idea for a teacher's retirement gift depends on the giver - if it is from a student, then something which reflect thought rather than money will probably be most appreciated and treasured.  However, if the present is from their work colleagues, a personalized gift relating to their interests.

For a military retirement idea, flags, colors, or some replica hand gun mounted in a case might be appropriate.  Find out as much about the person's background and it should throw up ideas - for example, if they've been stationed in somewhere unusual, you could incorporate that into the gift.

If you're looking for something extra special, personalizing offers the opportunity to create a unique gift.  It's possible to personalize almost anything - from golf balls to clothing and from military memorabilia to unique clocks.

Beware of buying a "gag gift" unless you are sure that your colleague has a sense of humour and is likely to appreciate it!

Plan ahead - if you've been asked to buy a present for a work colleague or friend, ask around in plenty of time for gift ideas.  With the advent of being able to buy gifts online - you don't even need to step out of your front door - so once you've chosen the gift!

Finally, if the day of someone's retirement arrives and you're still stuck for a gift - it's not too late to opt for a retirement gift basket, which will be shown off to friends and relatives who visit to offer their congratulations.
