Natural Remedies for Varicose Veins

Varicose veins result due to insufficiency of the valves in the communicating veins

Varicose veins are veins on the legs which become large and twisted, causing pain, swelling, or itching. They are an extreme form of spider veins.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

If you are suffering from some or all of the following:-

  • Legs aching and feeling heavy (particularly after physical activity)
  • Skin becoming dry, itchy and thin
  • Skin darkening
  • Skin discoloration around the veins (brown/blue colour)
  • Swollen ankles
  • Minor injuries taking a longer time to heal properly

    then you may have varicose veins.

    What Causes Varicose Veins ?

    The cause may be one or several of the following:-

    • your genes (it's inherited)
    • aging
    • injury to the leg
    • menopause
    • overweight
    • pregnancy
    • standing for long periods
    • straining

    How Can I Prevent Varicose Veins?

    Whilst it's not always possible to prevent them, there are some things that you can do to reduce the risk:-

    • lift carefully
    • lose weight
    • stand less and sit down when possible
    • take exercise
    • wear supportive tights, socks or stockings
    • improve your diet (see below)

    Taking care can help reduce the risk of developing varicose veins.

    Diet for Healthy Legs

    Eating the right foods can help prevent the damage and deterioration.  Eating a diet that is rich in the following foods, may help:

    • fibre - this can help prevent constipation which is one of the main causes of straining
    • eat superfoods, in particular fresh berries and foods full of flavonoids.
    • eat fish, rich in omega 3
    • eat fresh fruit full of vitamin C
    • cut down on sugar, salt and alcohol

    Take further advice from your doctor on the appropriate diet to help you.

    Homeopathic Medicine & Varicose Veins

    Whilst a massage can be the simplest natural method to help ease the discomfort, there are some other alternative or homeopathic remedies that may offer relief:-

    • Aloe vera gel can be applied to relive itching.
    • Apple cider vinegar has shown significant benefits for relieving varicose veins.
    • Applying a cold compress soaked with witch hazel and essential oils to your legs helps soothe varicose veins (a traditional aromatherapy remedy)
    • Calcarea fluorica is consider the best remedy, especially for bulging veins.  Taken togethr with Yarrow may help improve the elasticity of the walls of the veins.
    • Horse Chestnut - The herb aescin, the extract from the dried seeds of the horse-chestnut plant, strengthens blood vessel walls, helping to prevent veins from softening and bulging
    • Lachesis - to relieve painful inflammation
    • Pulsatilla, a homeopathic remedy taken from the windflower plant.  It can help to boost circulation of stagnant blood
    • Witch Hazel - the homeopathic, Hamamelis, can help tired legs and sore muscles.
    • Zincum - works well if your legs feel weak or tremble

    What are Spider Veins ?

    Spider veins normally appear on the face, neck, upper arms or thighs and are often characterized by a small round, red spot with tiny red veins radiating outward like a spider's legs. Whilst they are nothing to be concerned about, many people wish to treat them as they can be unsightly.
